Saskatchewan RCMP charged two men in Asquith, SK with multiple firearms offences, following an investigation on Wednesday.

Officers were searching a vehicle and residence in relation to an ongoing investigation into illegal activity in the area. They reportedly located and seized drug trafficking paraphernalia, two firearms (one loaded) and a replica firearm. Two males were arrested in connection to these searches.

As a result, 40-year-old Gregory Friesen of Asquith and 26 year-old Austin Derkatz of Red Deer, Alta. are both charged with unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime. Derkatz has an additional charge of unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm.

Friesen faces several other charges, such as possession of a stolen firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm with ammunition, four counts of failure to comply with firearms prohibition and failure to comply with a release order.

Both men appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday.

The investigation was led by the Saskatoon Crime Reduction Team (CRT) with the assistance of the Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit, the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team, Digital Forensic Services and the Warman Detachment.

“The Saskatoon CRT is committed to disrupting criminal activity and making our communities safer,” Sgt. Kory Davidsen said in a media release. “Illegally-possessed firearms have no place in our communities. I’m pleased that, in partnership with other Saskatchewan RCMP resources, we were able to take these firearms off the streets.”

Any information on illegal activity can be reported to your local RCMP detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
