Samuel Takakenew sentenced for accessory charge in Laverdiere case

A man facing a charge connected to the Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to accessory after the fact to murder.

Samuel Takakenew, 37, who appeared in Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford, was sentenced to 12 months or one year in custody.

He pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder between the dates of May 1 to 10, 2019.

The court ordered a publication ban on all details of the hearing until the judge or jury, depending on the matter, involving all the other accused individuals have retired to consider their verdict.

Justice Gerald Allbright sentenced Takakenew to 12 months or 365 days in custody. He has already served 246 days, which is equal to 369 days enhanced remand credit, so his time has already been served.

Takakenew was also ordered to two-years probation. He must also provide a DNA sample. He also received a lifetime firearms prohibition.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Her remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford July 11, 2019.
