RCMP Report: Assault arrests, new robbery investigation

Dec 9, 2021 | 1:00 PM

Over the past week, Battlefords RCMP have seen less calls for service, but are still responding to incidents of assault.

The detachment had 21 such reports over the past service period, with several incidents warranting arrests and charges. On Dec. 1, they received multiple calls of a male suspect involved in thefts at four separate businesses in east North Battleford, where he threatened to harm staff that confronted him.

“It was pretty clear from the types of complaints we were getting that it was the same individual,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said.

After being located and arrested a short time later, 25-year-old Ray Bird appeared in court on Dec. 2, for one count of assault, two counts of uttering threats and four counts of theft under $5,000. No one was injured in any of the incidents.

Minor injuries were incurred in an incident on Mosquito First Nation on Sunday. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued for 36-year-old Kelly McDonald on an assault charge. The victim, who was familiar with the suspect, did not require medical attention. Police are still searching for McDonald.

In another arrest, police apprehended 29-year-old Emile Ratt on Dec. 2, who faces two counts of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Lastly, a 16-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly spraying another male with bear mace and now faces charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Warrants executed

Police had another case of identity fraud, where 26-year-old male was arrested on numerous outstanding warrants after a vehicle stop Saturday evening on 100th Street. The subject, Harley Soare of North Battleford, provided police with a false name, which was quickly discovered after he was unable to spell the false name he provided.

Tremblay said Soare had warrants in multiple municipalities, including an assault with a weapon in the Battlefords area.

“There were a couple of warrants out of Alberta that weren’t executed,” he said. “A couple of fail to complies and missed court dates.

In additions to the warrants, the accused faces a new charge of obstruction and made his first appearance in provincial court on Dec. 6.

Residential break-ins

The detachment had 423 calls come in, including 10 break and enter investigations. Several of the incidents had similarities in execution and goods taken.

Police received a report regarding a storage shed on the 1500 block of 105th Street in North Battleford, where power tools were reported missing. This is determined to have taken place between Nov. 30 and the evening of Dec. 3.

A garage on the 1300 block of 104th Street in North Battleford was also broken into between Dec. 2–4 and some tools were reported stolen. Another occurred at a garage on the 1500 block of 104th Street in North Battleford sometime on Monday, tools and stereo equipment are reported missing.

“Because the items being taken are similar, we’re certainly keeping the possibility these incidents are related,” Tremblay said. “We’re hoping that if people saw anything suspicious in these time frames, this might tweak their memory and they could report it to us.”

Two other incidents of note include a break and enter to a residence on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on Dec. 6, where a 27-year-old male was located at the property and arrested. Facing charges of resisting arrest and break and enter, he has been released from custody, pending a court appearance in the New Year.

Another report came from a business on Red Pheasant Cree Nation on Tuesday, where suspects have been identified and charges are pending.

Drunk drivers, other calls

There were three individuals charged with impaired driving offences, two of which involved people either fleeing or ignoring police instructions to not drive. Tremblay said it’s unfortunate to try and help someone avoid making a decision to drive intoxicated, when they then wait 30 seconds and hop into the vehicle anyway with police sitting there.

“Icy roads are already challenges to driving. Then you throw in alcohol, that’s certainly not a good idea,” he said.

There were nine reported vehicle thefts, with two searches ongoing. A grey 2007 Buick Lucerne (Sask License 783-LPW) reported stolen from 22nd Street in Battleford on Dec. 3 and a Yellow 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt (Sask License 585-GLC) reported stolen from a residence on the Red Pheasant Cree Nation Monday morning.

There were also 18 Mental Health Act investigations, 17 traffic collisions, 57 various traffic charges and three missing persons reports (no active cases).

Anyone with information on any incident is urged to call the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
