Sask Music Awards nominee Megan Nash coming to Battlefords

Dec 2, 2021 | 2:39 PM

An acclaimed singer-songwriter heading to the Battlefords later this month has just found out she was nominated for a few Saskatchewan Music Awards.

Megan Nash was nominated under the Alternative Artist of the Year and the Rock/Pop Artist of the Year categories. As well, the video Play Creative for Megan Nash & the Best of Intentions was nominated for the Music Video of the Year for Nash’s song Chew Quietly/Clean Slate.

“That just happened this morning so that was pretty exciting,” she said when reached by battlefordsNOW on Thursday. “There is something so special about the Saskatchewan Music Awards. Because they are smaller awards it feels more like your community is recognizing you. I’m very honoured and I really respect the art that is being made in this province. I’m happy to be involved in the conversation.”

Her second studio album, entitled, “Soft Focus Futures,” was just released last month.

Based in the Moose Jaw area, Nash describes her style as Alternative-Folk with some Alternative-Rock and Roots influences included for good measure.

She said she writes quite a bit about farming and agriculture themes but she is not necessarily a country music artist, per se.

“I was joking the other day, and I called my songs farm-core,” Nash said with a laugh. “There are a lot of references to rural Saskatchewan throughout my work.”

In addition to being nominated to the Saskatchewan Music Awards in 2021, she was previously nominated for a Juno award in 2019 for the Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for her prior studio album called Seeker.

Nash who also plays the guitar will perform solo for her upcoming North Battleford show.

“Musically, it will be a bit more stripped back,” she said. “It will allow more space for storytelling. So folks can expect to hear a bit more of the story behind the songs, and hear more of the stories about the record. An evening of songs and stories is what folks can expect.”

For Nash, performing in the Battlefords has always been a highlight for her.

“Honestly, some of my favourite shows have been in that city,” she said. “I’m looking so forward to getting back. I find quite often people show up and they are ready to be goofy with me, and I love that. I play songs that are about heartache and my grief, but in between that I love to lighten things up and have a lot of playfulness in the show as well. I find the crowds in North Battleford are coming along on that journey, and I am so grateful for that.”

Megan Nash will perform at She-NANIGANS music venue on Dec. 18.
