RCMP Report: Multiple garage related break-ins

Dec 2, 2021 | 5:00 AM

The arrest and subsequent charges of Eugene Bear earlier this month derailed the number of break-ins taking place at North Battleford businesses, however, Battlefords RCMP dealt with 10 unrelated incidents from Nov. 24 through to Nov. 30.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the number of break and enter calls has remained a little high given the time of year. However, he added that this sort of occurrence will happen less frequently as the weather continues to get colder.

“Garages and sheds are often a target because they’re a little bit more of a soft target, little less likelihood to get interrupted,” he said.

One such case was a 36-year-old male from Glaslyn charged with breaking and entering into a garage on the 1100 block of 105th Street, shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Nov. 26. Tremblay said there may be some indications that alcohol or drugs were involved given both the suspect’s condition and the time of day.

“It’s a bit odd for that to be that earlier in the evening, but again, drugs and alcohol may have been involved,” he said. “It’s not clear what his intent was.”

The accused has since been released and will make his first appearance in court on Jan. 10.

Another case involved a 46-year-old male breaking into a home on Clark Drive shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Nov. 24, where he was arrested without incident. The suspect, charged with breaking and entering and driving while prohibited, reportedly knew the homeowners, but was not living there.

“It’s possible theft may not have been his intent,” Tremblay said.

The man appears in court Dec. 6.

Domestic assault suspect arrested

The detachment had 464 calls from Nov. 24 through to Nov. 30, including 12 assault investigations. Of those, one resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old male suspect.

Police called to the 800 block of 110th Street on Monday afternoon, where the caller was reportedly approached by a woman alleging she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The victim was located by police, who found she had minor injuries and had her transported to hospital for treatment. A while later, the suspect was located and arrested.

Tremblay said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

“We’re attempting to get a couple more witness statements from people who were no longer on scene, but may have been around,” he said. “There’s a few other things to look at before any decision on charges.”

Other cases

Police had 11 reported vehicle thefts and are actively searching for three vehicles from the region.

This includes a red 2005 Chevrolet Impala (Sask License 589-MJX) reported stolen on Nov. 26 from the 1500 block of 101st Street, a grey 2004 Buick Rainier CXL (Sask License 202-MDA) reported stolen sometime between Nov. 15–22 from a residence on Sweetgrass First Nation and a black 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab (Sask License 451-LWS) reported stolen from the 700 block of 109th Street sometime prior to Nov. 27.

Other calls for service include eight Mental Health Act investigations, six missing persons (two of which are active), 14 traffic collisions, 73 traffic charges and one individual charged with impaired driving.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
