Homeless shelter open again after renovations

Called “Miwasin Kikinaw: Our Home is Good,” the Battlefords’ homeless shelter is open again for those in need.

This Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC) is the current manager/operator of the facility and its programming.

BATC director of operations Alexis Christensen said a number of renovations were completed last month.

“It looks great,” she said. “First of all we were able to do a lot of updates, but also working around with some better space.”

As part of the three weeks of upgrades, the facility was thoroughly cleaned and modifications were made to the layout to create a more open concept look and to add some meeting rooms.

Those staying at the shelter were temporarily placed at the Lone Star Hotel in North Battleford while the work was underway, and were able to return to the facility on Oct. 21.

The shelter, which can accommodate over 40 individuals, has on average about 30 clients per night.

“We’re not going to turn anybody away,” Christensen said.

Meals and snacks are offered during the day. The shelter also provides programming for clients that includes sessions on such topics as mental health and addictions, as well as fun activities.

“Our goal is to have the shelter open at all times for people,” Christensen said. “We’re finding that they are really happy to be part of the programming. The groups have been full.”

Two nurses come in on a regular basis to assess clients and provide referrals as needed.

“It’s been a huge success. A lot of the clients have complex needs and are at risk in a number of ways for health,” Christensen said. “So it’s just good to have experts come to see them each week.”

Following COVID-19 protocols, Christensen said all staff are fully vaccinated. Masking is also in effect.

The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs, which has been operating the shelter since Oct. 1, has also been engaging with representatives from various community partner agencies to look at the programs or services each offer, and discuss future plans.

“We just thank the community for their support,” Christensen added. “It’s an honour to serve the people, and we’re doing the best we possibly can.”
