Honouring Cave's Legacy

Battlefords Minor Hockey partners with Oilers for Colby’s Kids

The Battlefords Minor Hockey Association has announced they will be hosting a special follow-up to their First Shift Program, called Colby’s Kids.

A multi-week program running Dec. 10 to Jan. 28, Colby’s Kids was launched by the Edmonton Oilers in honour the late Colby Cave. The program will feature Oilers alumni Eric Gryba, who will lead the skills and training along with BMHA instructors.

President of the BMHA, Kyle Kellgren said it’s a program that reflects well what Colby was all about.

“I knew Colby very well, and he was someone that always came back, always gave, and was always doing something for the community, even once he left for Swift Current [to play junior],” he said. “So for the Edmonton Oilers Foundation to reach out to us with this idea, it was a no-brainer. We’re very excited and so proud to be able to provide this for our community, through the Oilers and through Colby’s great legacy.”

The program will be open to all children ages six through 10 who have never previously been enrolled in minor hockey, and includes six one-hour on-ice sessions held Friday evenings.

Each participant will receive an Edmonton Oilers Colby’s Kids jersey and matching bag tag, along with a $100 voucher towards minor hockey registration for the 2022-23 season.

The registration fee is $150 per participant and will be offered first to participants who have taken part in the First Shift Program, as Colby’s Kids will be a continuation of First Shift with further skill development for the players.

Kellgren said it was important to honour the Cave family with the program, to show once again just how much Colby’s impact is still felt the community and making a positive difference for the next generation of young hockey players and people.

“Colby was obviously a North Battleford kid, and his parents Al and Jennifer Cave still live in town along with their daughter Taylor, Colby’s sister, so we’re really excited for them to be involved with this program as well,” Kellgren said.

“It’s another proud moment for minor hockey to have the Cave family involved and coming to the rink to see Colby’s great legacy and what he’s brought to this community and will continue to for a very long time.”

The Colby’s Kids program is designed as an accessible and affordable way to help bridge the gap between learn-to-play programs, providing kids and parents with more exposure to the sport through easy to access skill development and learning sessions to encourage continued participation in hockey.
