Wilkie, Unity, Maidstone earn provincial volleyball hardware

Everyone taking in the 2A boys volleyball championship over the weekend knew the title going to Wilkie was inevitable.

The McLurg High Broncos dominated every set of play, from their first whistle on Friday to the last block that secured the 25-18, 25-17 win over Moose Jaw’s Cornerstone Christian. In seven matches, that first set of the gold medal match was the most points the Broncos allowed all tournament.

Head Coach Greg Maymer told battlefordsNOW that he felt blessed to have coached this team for the past few weeks.

“We had a great group of grade 12 leaders and plenty of support from the school, parents and community,” he said. “It was fun just watching them do their thing.”

After about a month of the season, Maymer said he started to realize this group had a legitimate shot and their expectations increased. However, he added that the players showed a lot of discipline in how they approached provincials.

“Anything can happen in any match, so we still tried to take every situation as one point at a time,” he said.

“Just the opportunity to finish the season and win everything was the icing on top of the cake.”

The dominance McLurg had was also showcased by highlight reel plays throughout the tournament, including several instances of opposing players being struck on or near the head by a Broncos attack.

One of the biggest swings of the tournament, which took place during the championship match.

“You feel bad for them, because you don’t want anyone to get hurt, but those are the sorts of things that get volleyball players fired up,” Maymer said.

He added that the squad owed a lot to their supporters throughout the season and tournament.

“They took care of everything that we couldn’t take care of ourselves,” he said. “A total school and community effort.”

Huskies make history

Also finishing on the podium was Maidstone High School, who defeated Sturgis Composite from Durham 25-21, 10-25, and 16-14 to win bronze. Head Coach Sam Dawson said it hadn’t fully sunk in for the team on Monday.

“We got into school this morning and the sign was changed to say congrats that we won the bronze,” he said. “We’re very pleased with the weekend.”

The bronze finish was signficant for the school, as it was the first provincial medal for a Maidstone Comprehensive boys team.

“I was unaware of that till our principal told us on the way home, so that makes it [even] more special,” Dawson said.

In addition to the bronze medal match, a highlight of the tournament for Maidstone was defeating the hosts St. Walburg 25-23, 26-24 in the quarterfinals. The Huskies had faced their rivals multiple times this year, including conference and regional playoffs.

“We knew if we made the crossover, anything could happen,” he said. “The team was great, the host committee was great, it was a really well run tournament.”

Match point in the 2A bronze medal match.

Unity shows strong as 3A hosts

The Unity Composite Warriors ended their tournament on a less happy final whistle, but still came away with hardware.

Playing in front of a home crowd at the 3A Provincial Championship, the Warriors finished in second, with their only two losses coming at the hands of the tournament winner, Valley Christian Academy from Osler. Aside from those defeats, Unity never dropped a set.

battlefordsNOW reached out to Unity Composite for an interview, but didn’t receive a reply by the time of publication.
