Poppy Flag raised in North Battleford for Remembrance Week

Nov 5, 2021 | 1:17 PM

The Poppy Flag was erected outside City Hall in North Battleford Friday in honour of all the veterans who served.

Mayor David Gillan joined representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branch No. 70 North Battleford for the ceremony.

“We’re delighted to be part of Remembrance Day ceremonies,” he said. “This year, like last year, it will have to be mostly virtual. It’s a very important time for our community to reflect and remember those that provided the freedom that we enjoy today.”

Local Legion President Marilyn Clark said due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Legion will hold its Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 as an online event via YouTube for the public to watch at home.

“We just thought it was safer to livestream it,” she said.

People can also listen to the service on CJNB. It will also be broadcast through Access Communications.

Only veterans and a few invited guests will be able to participate in the ceremony in person.

After the service, representatives will lay some wreaths at the Cenotaph.

Then, at 12 p.m. the Legion branch will be open again to the public.

The Branch No. 70 “Honour Our Veterans” Banner program is now in its second year. A total of 20 sponsored banners featuring local veterans have been installed along 100 Street in North Battleford, during the period of Remembrance.

“I love them,” Clark said of the banners. “My parents are up there, back to back. When you go past there, you certainly get a feeling of pride, seeing all those people. Some are still with us, and some are long gone. It’s a way of bringing them back to the forefront.”
