Nov 3, 2021 | 3:49 PM

A confrontation between two groups in North Battleford resulted in one person left unconscious and two others arrested.

Battlefords RCMP responded to a report of a physical altercation at a business on the Highway 16 bypass just before midnight on October 28, where they found the 40 year-old male victim and had him treated by medical personnel. Two other male victims were reported to have been assaulted by the second group of men that fled. Two suspects were arrested shortly after being identified.

Charges are still pending at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said there are several elements to determine regarding this incident between two groups of three males.

“When you’re dealing with an altercation between two groups of people, there’s lots of things to gather, such as witness statements, video evidence, that type of thing,” he said. “These were two groups of individuals that would not have known each other prior to that night and we don’t know the reasons why it went sideways at this time.”

Tremblay added that charges will likely be laid sometime late next week or early next week. Both suspects have outstanding matters being dealt with.

“That takes away some of the urgency away in making sure we get this investigation done properly,” he said.

Resisting arrest, uncooperative victim

Police had another serious incident last week after being called to a residence on the 2300 block of 100th Street, where an unwanted guest who was intoxicated and violent. During the 18-year-old female subject’s arrest, the suspect assaulted the arresting member while being taken to a cell block and attempted to disarm the officer of his firearm. Tremblay said that is an extremely high risk situation.

“Had she been successful, now you have an armed individual whose showing propensity to be violent and you have no idea how that’s going to turn out,” he said. “Fortunately she wasn’t successful and they were able to take control of her pretty quickly.”

The 18-year-old suspect, who hails from the Spiritwood area, is charged with assaulting a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer. She has been released from custody and will make her first appearance in Provincial Court on November 29.

In another assault investigation, a male in his late 20s was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday. He was uncooperative with police and was found to be on a Canada wide warrant for parole violation.

“He was not cooperative with police and all and also quite difficult with the hospital staff,” Tremblay said. “He’s been taken into custody but is also still getting treatment for his injuries.”

Tremblay said subsequent investigation indicated where the scene actually occurred, at or near a residence on the Saulteaux First Nation. They may have also identified witnesses.

“It is advancing, so we’re hoping that in the next few days we will have more,” he said.

No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing.
