North Battleford area residents will be in for a treat tonight when acclaimed Canadian classical violinist Véronique Mathieu and pianist Stephanie Chua perform at the Dekker Centre.

The event, “Hidden Gems: Music by Women Composers Performed by the Mathieu-Chua Duo,” starting at 7 p.m. is free to attend. It is being sponsored by Rongve Wealth Management Group of RBC Dominion Securities as a private rental not a Dekker Centre presentation. People are asked to arrive early.

Rob Rongve, investment advisor of Rongve Wealth Management Group, is excited to bring the offering to the Battlefords.

“To have world class musicians come to the community I think is just a great opportunity for people,” he said.

Rongve said he has heard Mathieu in particular perform several times, and says “it’s quite amazing.”

“To support the arts that way, by coming out and hearing somebody that’s that brilliant, is time well spent,” he said.

Both Mathieu and Chua are highly accomplished musicians. Mathieu is associate professor of violin in the Department of Music with the University of Saskatchewan. Stephanie Chua, who is based in Toronto, has played with a number of organizations.

Mathieu said she and Chua are currently preparing to put out a CD together.

Mathieu said their concert at the Dekker Centre will cover compositions by women composers dating from the 1600s to the present day. She and Chua will give brief introductions before they perform to provide some context to the pieces.

Local music educator Gene Aulinger, who is involved in organizing the event, is also founding member of The North Battleford Community Youth Strings program which is based loosely on the internationally recognized El Sistema model.

Aulinger is thrilled that Mathieu and Chua will be coming to perform at the Dekker Centre.

“To have them in North Battleford is a gift for our community,” Aulinger said.

The North Battleford Community Youth Strings program participants will be attending the show tonight too, and will have a chance to hear the accomplished performers.

“It’s great for our kids to know how they could perform to that level if they keep at it,” Aulinger said. “If our kids could aspire to that, I think would be a great role model for them.”

The organizers are requiring attendees to provide proof of full vaccination, along with photo ID for admittance. To be fully vaccinated individuals need to have received their second vaccination at least two weeks prior.
