Public health inspectors enforce health orders in Lloydminster

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is cracking down on violations of public health orders.

According to a media release issued on Tuesday, Public Health inspectors issued multiple fines last week, including three in Lloydminster. Two were individual fines of $2,800, plus one summary offence ticket to Manhattan Inn Ltd of $14,000. The fines were for failure to mask and the ticket was for failure to screen for proof of vaccination or negative test.

Another $2,800 fine was handed out in Vawn, Sask., for failure to screen for proof of vaccination or negative test. Any business who intentionally permits access to their facility without doing this screening when this is applicable are in violation of the public health order and could be subject to a summary offence ticket.

According to Battlefords RCMP, this kind of enforcement is primarily done by the helath inspectors.

“If we were to get a complaint, we’d likely pass it on to them with what information we might have,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay told battlefordsNOW.

As a result, police involvement is limited to more direct incidents. Tremblay said the only situations where the detachment would likely get involved as the primary in the investigation is if there was an active criminal offence occurring.

“Such as refusing to leave a business when asked, threats being made or an actual assault,” he explained.

Under the Health Information and Privacy Act, the Ministry of Health cannot disclose the names of individuals who have received fines.

Another pandemic Halloween

In the same release, the province included guidance for Halloween festivities this weekend. Among the tips for those planning to trick or treat, stay home if sick, keep to a small group, wash your hands and utilize a mask, even though there’s no mandate on wearing a mask outdoors. Similar guidance has been released to the public in communities like North Battleford.

As of October 26, there are 76,607 positive cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan, with 286 hospitalizations, 73,242 recoveries and 827 deaths. Since the beginning of vaccine distribution in the province, 85 per cent of those 12+ have received their first dose and 77 per cent of those 12+ are fully vaccinated. The case fatality rate for positive cases is 1.1 per cent.
