City provides tips for safe Halloween

North Battleford residents are getting a reminder to make safe choices when they go trick or treating this weekend.

The City’s Fire Department and Community Safety Officers released a statement with safety guidance for families celebrating Halloween. This is not an official set of guidelines to follow in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic, but rather a few tips that parents can take to ensure everyone has a fun and safe Halloween. This includes not eating treats until they are examined by a parent and trick-or-treating in small groups, with younger children accompanied by an adult or guardian.

“People should trick or treat in groups, but take precautions,” Communications Coordinator Dustin MacDonald said.

While recommended, these tips are not ordinances in the same manner as COVID-19 mandates. MacDonald said the provincial government is the place to go for any questions regarding violations of public health measures.

“We follow the guidelines set by the province and there hasn’t been any issued specifically for Halloween,” he said. “Our residents are used to that and have been going to the province for any clarification.”

Darkness is another concern at this time of the year, so anyone out past supper time can bring option to supplement what they get from streetlights. This is also important with any vehicles driving around, which MacDonald said important to be aware of for motorists.

“Parents could provide [kids] with a flashlight or glow stick to help with the darkness,” MacDonald said. “And make sure to encourage kids who cross streets to only do so at specified crosswalks and corners and obey traffic signals.”

“Just basic safety tips for the kids to follow, that parents can go over with them before sending them out.”

Fire Chief Lindsay Holm recommended doing a check on smoke alarms this Halloween, something commonly forgotten about ahead of the winter season.

“Talk to everyone in your home about what to do when the smoke alarm sounds,” he said.
