UPDATE: The 27-year-old woman will make her first court appearance on Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m.

An individual driving while intoxicated has been arrested and is expected to appear in court for several criminal offences.

Around 5 p.m. on Oct. 5, Glaslyn RCMP were alerted to an incident involving a vehicle that attempted passing another driver on the shoulder of Highway 4. Reports state the car hit a semi with a trailer that was turning in front of them.

The roof of the vehicle was completely torn off as a result of the collision, and the car fled the scene, travelling on the highway.

At this time, the Meadow Lake detachment received reports of a car travelling northbound on Highway 4 with extensive damage, a destroyed windshield and the roof torn off.

Despite police locating the vehicle and activating emergency equipment, the driver continued heading into Meadow Lake.

Officers continued their pursuit of the vehicle through the city before it stopped at an east side residence.

An investigation revealed a female driver was alone and not injured. After being taken to the Meadow Lake detachment, police determined she was intoxicated and nearly four times over the legal limit.

A search of the vehicle found six empty liquor bottles and one half-full bottle.

In a media release, Meadow Lake RCMP detachment Commander Ryan How stated the damage of the vehicle was a clear indication of how dangerous the situation was to the public.

“I’ve responded to many impaired driving investigations as a police officer. This incident could have been tragic,” he said.

“I’m thankful in this instance no one — not the individual or the members of the public travelling on the same roadway — was injured.”

A 27-year-old unidentified woman from Meadow Lake is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, failure to stop after an accident, impaired operation while over the legal limit and impaired operation of a conveyance.

A court date has not yet been determined.
