Fred Light Museum plans to unveil 2021 ‘Honour Our Veterans’ banner program

The Fred Light Museum will unveil its 2021 “Honour Our Veterans” banner program at a special ceremony later this month.

The event will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Alex Dillabough Centre for invited guests.

The “Honour our Veterans” banner program in Battleford is being organized by the Fred Light Museum, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 in Battleford and the Town of Battleford.

A total of 22 new banners have been sold for this year, which brings the full tally up to 94 banners for the last three years since the program started. All 94 banners will be installed in the Battleford community for the 2021 program.

Most of the veterans honoured on the banners are from the Battleford area, as well as local First Nations communities.

“We have a good number of First Nations people being represented this year,” Fred Light Museum manager Bernadette Leslie said.

Starting on Oct. 25, the new banners will be installed on light standards on 22nd Street in Battleford, while the banners from last year and 2019 will be installed throughout the various avenues and streets closest to 22nd Street. All the banners will be left up through Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 until mid-November.

Leslie is thrilled with the ongoing success of the program.

“I am surprised with how much support we keep getting for it each year; I just love it,” she said. “Our veterans need to be recognized and not forgotten. This is one program the [Fred Light] Museum Board is really proud to be backing.”

The unveiling ceremony will include a video about the veterans being honoured in this year’s program.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, only invited guests will be permitted to attend. Participants will be required to wear masks and provide proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 testing result.

Leslie said she hopes to have an advance count of attendees by Oct. 22 to know how many will be there due to capacity limits.

“With COVID-19 restrictions, I’m trying to keep it to mostly the sponsors of the banners, family members and the dignitaries, and any town staff coming to it,” she said.
