Battlefords Interval House received some support from two local businesses and the community with a big donation Wednesday.

Discovery Co-op and North Battleford’s Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd. in total gifted the women’s shelter that serves the Battlefords with $4,500, plus 130 bags containing many basics to make life easier for the shelter clients.

To make up the $4,500 total amount, Discovery Co-op gave a monetary donation of $2,000 plus all the filled bags, and Bridges gave a cheque for $2,500.

The gift bags will be given to those who use the shelter services.

Discovery Co-op said in a release to keep community giving in everyone’s thoughts, Discovery Co-op partnered with Bridges to raise awareness for the “Good Buy to Hunger Campaign,” with proceeds benefitting the Battlefords Interval House.

The campaign was initiated through one of the Discovery Co-op’s social responsibility projects to help the community.

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness and donate much needed items for the Interval House. The “Good Buy to Hunger” campaign bags were displayed in the North Battleford Discovery Co-op Food Store and all three Discovery Co-op Gas bars where members and customers were able to make a donation to support the cause.

Discovery Co-op said the bags were filled with products that are in high demand at the Interval House, and included everything from personal hygiene products, to clothing and canned foods.

About 130 filled bags were delivered to the Interval House. As well, community partner Bridges supported the campaign by selling the bags at the dealership. Bridges and Discovery Co-op together presented a monetary donation to Interval House for a total of $4,500 Wednesday.

“It is through these initiatives that Discovery Co-op, our members and community partners can continue to keep our communities thriving,” Discovery Co-op General Manager Mike Nord said in the release.

North Battleford’s Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd. dealer owner/operator Duane LaFreniere said the company was glad to be able to support the cause.

“We are always looking to partner with one of the service clubs or charities in North Battleford,” he said. “When Leanne [Ducommun] approached me about partnering with the Co-op to support the Interval House, that was a pretty easy one. This is a great organization. We are always looking to help out in the community in some way, and this was just an absolute perfect opportunity. It was a really great way to raise awareness for the Interval House, as well as for us to give money towards it.”

Battlefords Interval House board member Rhea Good expressed her gratitude to the local businesses and the community for their support.

“Once again, thanks for the generosity of our community that supports this operation and supports this facility that has an ongoing need for decades, and we expect that need will unfortunately go on into the future,” she said. “All the monies that come from our community and local businesses are truly appreciated. The funds go towards useful and needed purchases.”
