North Stars top Millionaires 9-5 to open Showcase

Oct 4, 2021 | 3:00 PM

The goals were coming early and often Monday at the Legends Centre in Warman, as the Battlefords North Stars topped the Melville Millionaires 9-5 to open the league Showcase.

After a 2-1 Melville lead at the end of the first, and 4-4 game to the end of the second, the Stars’ five consecutive goals in the third put the game away in favor of the team, with all four forward lines contributing to the scoring.

Eight different players chipped in with a goal in the victory, as Ryland McNinch potted a pair, while Tanner Klimpke and Tynan Ewart scored their first career SJHL goals, and Jake Southgate, Emmett Wurst, Dylan Esau, Dace Prymak, and K.T. Walters also scored for the team.

Between the pipes, goaltender Cam Beson made 34 saves for the win, standing tall when called upon.

At the other end, Melville’s Colby Ball had a pair of his own for the Millionaires as well, while Payton Kostyshyn Jake Spak, and Jackson Bohan also scored in the loss and Marek Andres stopped 33 of 42 shots against.

With the win, the Stars improve to 4-1-1 to start the season, while Melville falls to 0-2.

Special teams would ultimately play a large role in the night’s storyline throughout, as Melville scored three of their five goals on the man-advantage – going 3-for-7 on the day. The North Stars went 2-for-2, and added a shorthanded goal (McNinch’s second tally of the day) for good measure.

The North Stars will return to action Tuesday night at the Showcase versus Yorkton.

Tuesday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will begin with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
