North Stars fall 5-4 in OT thriller in Kindersley

Sep 26, 2021 | 12:33 AM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 5-4 in overtime to the Kindersley Klippers Saturday in Kindersley.

Rookie forward, Emmett Wurst had two goals for the Stars in the loss, while fellow first-year Holden Doell and veteran Sam Witt also chipped in, for what would be their first career SJHL tallies.

Between the pipes, goalie Cam Beson again stood tall for the club, stopping 33 of 38 shots-against on the night.

Kindersley forward, Ethan Mack scored the OT winner for his team, while fellow Klippers, Charles Obobaifo, Noah Lindsay and Cash Arntsen also got on the board for the home side, and Matt Pesenti made 33 saves on 37 shots against for the win.

While the end result drops the Stars’ record to 1-0-1 after opening weekend, the evening was a back-and-forth contest where the fate of the game would come down to the wire to determine a winner.

Wurst opened the scoring for the North Stars, with not one but two goals in the opening eight minutes of the first, to make it 2-0 Stars, and give him three through his first two career SJHL games, after also lighting the lamp Friday.

However, Obobaifo’s first of the year late in the opening frame, followed by Lindsay’s first just over a minute into the second, quickly drew the home side Klippers even at 2-2, shortly after the first intermission.

Late in the second, Witt’s goal reestablished the Stars’ lead at 3-2, coming off a pass from Holden Doell, that allowed the defenceman to walk down the middle of the slot, and snap a quick backhand shot past the Kindersley netminder for the milestone marker.

After Georget tied the game for Kindersley 3-3 on a slick wrister, Arntsen gave the Klippers their first lead of the night, putting the Stars down 4-3 midway through the third.

Rather than allow the game to slip away though, the Stars responded quickly, to re-knot the score 3-3 when Doell deflected a shot-pass from Jordan Grill at the side of the net, to make it 4-4, where it would remain into overtime.

The extra frame saw excellent chances for both sides turned aside, as Presenti stoned Wurst’s hattrick bid on a breakaway, while Beson slammed the door on Klippers’ captain Mark Snarr on a goal-line net drive.

Mack’s winner came shortly after on a net-drive of his own, that deflected home off a defenceman’s skate in front, making it 5-4 Klippers the final.

The North Stars will now get a couple of days to rest up and regroup, before returning to play Tuesday versus the Notre Dame Hounds in North Battleford.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast Tuesday, will begin with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
