Sep 24, 2021 | 5:27 PM

A number of COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be available in the Battlefords area to meet the increased demand, with the province’s vaccination requirements coming next month.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is reporting that starting Sept. 27, the SHA will increase its immunization efforts to again offer various bookable, outreach and walk-in vaccine clinic options to residents.

A pop up clinic will be available at the North Battleford Library on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Then, a drive-through site will be available at 391 Yellowhead Highway No. 16, at the Finning Cat Building in Battleford, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 28.

Many area First Nations are taking precautions with the delta variant an increasing concern in the province and the region.

Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation has security at entrance points to ensure only members are permitted to enter.

“The current leaders, we had a lengthy discussion in regards to the alarming rate of COVID and the variants,” Chief Tanya Aguilar-Antiman said. “Looking at the statistics and who is ending up in the hospital, we are really concerned for our young ones, especially the ones not vaccinated – 12 years and younger.”

Aguilar-Antiman confirmed two children in the community under the eligible age for vaccinations tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks. However, she said they are staying at home and reported to be doing fine.

As another issue, the First Nation is preparing for elections to be held Nov. 5. Leadership is concerned about the risk of people congregating, so are asking people to stay within their bubbles to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in the community.

Aguilar-Antiman said she encourages families, “to be mindful of the situation.”

She added the First Nation hopes by monitoring the entrances to the First Nation, and reminding people not to engage in large gatherings, the community will better be able to stay safe.

“We’re trying to do our best to prevent an outbreak within our nation,” she said. “So as leaders we said this is what we need to do. We need to protect our people.”
