RCMP Report Part 1: Multiple assault related arrests

Sep 16, 2021 | 6:00 AM

An assault that occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning has resulted in the arrest of a 28 year-male on Mosquito First Nation.

Police responding to the call located a male victim with a non-life threatening knife injury to the torso, who was taken to hospital for treatment. Yesterday morning, a 28 year old male was arrested a short time later without incident, released from custody and scheduled to appear in North Battleford provincial court on October 25. He is facing one count of assault with a weapon.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said both parties were known to each other, adding that it was fortunate the injury wasn’t more serious.

“Especially so when you’re talking about an injury to the torso or neck area,” he said.

Battlefords RCMP had 24 other assault investigations, including one where the suspect resisted arrest on September 9. Police were called to a residence in Battleford that morning shortly after midnight and arrested 33 year-old Vital Gardypie. He faces two counts of assault and assaulting a police officer and one count each of breach of probation and resisting arrest.

The victims of this reported assault and the accused were reportedly known to each other. No injuries were reported from the incident and Gardypie appeared in court later that day.

Indecent act results in arrest

Battleford RCMP responded to 519 calls in the past seven-day service period, with one incident resulting in the arrest of an adult male touching himself in public.

Thirty-seven year-old Darwin Andrew was arrested on September 12 near Finlayson Island, following a report from two women saying the man had been following them while touching himself. Tremblay said the incident was wrapped up quickly and that drugs were found on the accused.

“The indication is that he was under the influence of drugs at the time,” Tremblay said. “How much of a factor that played in the incident I can’t say.”

Andrew appeared in North Battleford court on September 13 and is charged with committing an indecent act, possession of methamphetamine and breach of probation.

RCMP are also moving forward in an investigation of a man discharging a firearm at a vehicle in the Cochin district on September 8. While there was damage to the vehicle, no injuries were reported. Tremblay said a suspect has since been identified and charges are currently pending against a 23 year old male.

“We’re expecting to lay the charges and identify the person if a warrant is granted,” he said.

Anyone with information on any incident can assist the related investigation by calling the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
