Mirasty sentencing deferred in manslaughter case

The man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Sequin Mooswa homicide investigation had his sentencing postponed in North Battleford Provincial Court on Friday due to complications arising from the prior sentencing hearing.

On Oct. 27, 2020, Keenan Mirasty, 22, of North Battleford entered his plea to unlawfully causing the death of Sequin Mooswa on March 8, 2020 and thereby commit manslaughter.

The sentencing hearing for Mirasty, who remains in custody, was held on Aug. 11, 2021. A decision in the case was initially scheduled for Sept. 10.

However, Judge Daniel O’Hanlon said he could not proceed with sentencing at this time because Crown prosecutor Scott Bartlett and Defence lawyer Michael Nolin had different interpretations of the agreed statement of facts originally presented.

As a result, a new sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 10, 2022 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 2 to review what transpired in the case.

The court also scheduled a case management session for Friday, Dec. 3, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 2, which will be on the public record. If the Crown and Defence are able to agree upon the details of a statement of facts at that time, the hearing will not be needed and a new sentencing date will be set instead.

RCMP previously reported Sequin Mooswa, 22, was found deceased in a home on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on March 8, 2020.
