North Stars open preseason with back-to-back wins over Kindersley Monday

Forward Bradley Blake scored twice in the rookie game, while Holden Doell registered a goal and two points in the main camp contest, as the Battlefords North Stars opened their preseason Monday with a pair of 4-2 victories over the Kindersley Klippers in Kindersley.

Head coach of the Stars, Brayden Klimosko said he was happy to see his team come out with a good spark early.

“I thought both games were great; we did lots of good things, and with the rookie game especially the intensity was there,” Klimosko said. “Guys made some plays, and it was nice to be able to give our list kids and our prospects some good opportunity, as well as some of our [more veteran] players the following game.”

Sixteen-year-old Jace Bymoen, and 18-year-old Colby Bear added to Blake’s two tallies in the rookie game, which began at 1 p.m.; while veterans, KT Walters, Zane Florence and Ryland McNinch supplemented Doell’s marker in the main camp game held later in the afternoon.

Klimosko said as much as anything, it was just nice to see the team back on the ice and playing a competitive game again, after being held to just three games all of last season, prior to the cancellation.

“It’s almost like it’s been two years now since the last season, so it’s going to take a bit of time to get back to exactly where we want to be, but that’s why we have seven preseason games this year,” Klimosko said. “For day one [of the preseason] it was a good performance, and we’ll hopefully look to build on that moving forward.”

The North Stars will now get a day of practice before facing the Klippers again Wednesday night, this time at home at the Access Communications Centre. Puck drop Wednesday will be at 7:30 p.m.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcasts will begin with the regular season. The Stars will open their regular season schedule at home Sept. 24 versus the Klippers. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
