RCMP Report: Multiple break and enters investigated

Sep 2, 2021 | 12:11 PM

Battlefords RCMP are focused on break and enter crimes that have occurred primarily in downtown North Battleford.

There were 11 such investigations in the service area during the past week, including one on the 1300 block of 100th Street in North Battleford on Tuesday and a business’s secured yard on 99th Street on Aug. 26. The latter resulted in stolen golf cart batteries. Police also arrested 40-year-old Tara Giggie on Monday, charging her with being unlawfully in a dwelling, resisting arrest and breaching probation, following her breaking into a residence on 105th Street.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said it’s a slight bump in the number of break-ins, with several on the main drag in the city. He added that even they haven’t been able to establish a connection, these incidents over the summer have had similarities, in terms of location, time and execution.

“Whether all three last week are related is impossible to say right now,” Tremblay said. “But we do suspect that there is some connection with this trend over the past few months.”

In tackling this issue, Tremblay said there’s some difficulty in preventing more of them. While police are trying to increase their presence in that area of the city, it’s not an error-proof solution, given that these crimes have predominantly occurred after-hours and police can easily get disrupted from their patrol by other calls that come in.

“It takes seconds to patrol a block and there’s a lot of foot traffic,” he said. “You’d be shocked at how many people are on the street at those hours. So if it happens to be the pedestrian that’s waiting to carry out a B&E, he can just wait until there are no vehicles.”

Deterrents that have helped are alarms and video surveillance, though not all businesses in town have those installed. In regards to investigations previously reported, Tremblay stated they do not have any updates, other than they have yet to identify the suspect from break and enter pictures released earlier this week.

Other case files

Battlefords RCMP dealt with 580 calls in total during the latest service period, which included 25 assault investigations.

Two cases have resulted in suspects being identified. On Aug. 28, police were called to the 1400 block of 98th Street on a report of two people assaulted with bear mace. Charges are currently pending and the investigation is ongoing.

“There might be some breaches, but certainly assault with a weapon will be the major one,” Tremblay said.

The other case stems from an incident on the 1200 block of 111th Street this Tuesday, where a 26-year-old woman was transported to hospital with facial and head injuries. She’s expected to make a full recovery and that investigation is also ongoing. The victim and the suspect were reportedly known to each other.

Battlefords RCMP also had eight missing persons investigations (none active), 20 mental health investigations, two charges relating to impaired driving, 35 charges for various driving offences, eight traffic collisions and five vehicle thefts.

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a blue 2010 Ford F-350, which has an Alberta license plate of 73J-225, along with a white 2010 travel trailer. These were reported stolen from Cochin on Aug. 25.

Anyone with information on any incident in this report can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment, 301-RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
