Battlefords worker in Saskatoon hospital after being injured at construction site

A Battlefords construction worker was badly injured while working at a construction site north of North Battleford last week.

Manjinder “Mani” Singh is currently in hospital in Saskatoon where he is receiving treatment for his injuries after suffering spinal cord damage.

A GoFundMe Page set up to help the father of two and his family has raised $8,315 to date, well above the $5,000 goal. Some personal donations have also been received as well, bringing the amount to over $9,000.

Singh’s wife Amanda says her husband is in a great deal of pain and is unable to walk.

“We’re not sure what he is going to get back,” she told battlefordsNOW. “We’re hoping one day that he will walk again. There was spinal cord damage though, so we don’t know how much he’ll regain. We’re trying to keep hope, of course, that he’ll regain something for quality of life.”

The family has been in the middle of moving from Battleford to North Battleford as well, adding to the stress, as Amanda now travels to Saskatoon each day to see her husband in hospital.

Lisa Etcheverry, Amanda’s sister and Singh’s sister-in-law, related at the time of the injury, Singh was on the job site on the ground with other workers cleaning up and getting ready to leave for the day when the trusses up above suddenly started crashing down.

“They are not sure what happened but the trusses gave way,” Etcheverry told battlefordsNOW. “They could hear a crack. One of the guys yelled: ‘Run,’ and they all ran. Mani said no matter how fast he ran, he couldn’t outrun it. The trusses were like dominos, and several of them came down on top of him.”

Two other workers were also trapped, and sustained injuries as well.

When emergency crews arrived, the trusses had to be cut to extract Singh from underneath them.

“It was raining, and one of his coworkers was holding his head in his hand. Mani was going in and out of consciousness,” Etcheverry said. “He just kept on saying: ‘Please let me live for my kids.'”

Singh was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital, and then to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon where he underwent back surgery for his injuries.

“He sustained two burst fractures to his lumbar spine and a laceration to his spinal cord. His nerves were hanging out and some were crushed…,” Etcheverry said. “We don’t know if he will walk again. Only time will tell.”

She said the family are grateful for all the community support, adding that the tragedy has been very hard on them at a time when they were planning for their future.

“Everybody has been very much in shock,” Etcheverry said. “They are trying to be as positive as they can.”
