Property taxes due August 31 in North Battleford

Aug 27, 2021 | 4:00 PM

Property owners in North Battleford who haven’t paid their taxes yet are close to a very important deadline.

The city posted a reminder early this week, warning that property taxes that are to be paid by August 31 As of September 1, any missed payments will result in a 1.8 per cent penalty on any outstanding amounts for each month they remain unpaid.

City Manager Randy Patrick said the process of getting tax payments in has gone well so far, thanks to the number of people who now utilize the Tax Installment Payment Plan Service (T.I.P.P.S.). This allows property owners to pay in monthly installments with no late payment penalties, where the money is withdrawn on the 10th of each month.

“I can’t remember the exact percentage of users, but it’s getting quite high,” Patrick said. “It’s been in place for a long time.”

So far, Patrick said the most common talking points from people discussing their taxes this year compared to last year is in revaluations, which is done once every four years. The base date for the assessment values is January 1, 2019. Patrick said there is a difference for many property owners, but it’s expected given recent provincial changes.

“Even if you had a zero or one per cent increase, your taxes may go up or down depending on how you compared to other properties,” he said. “There was also a fairly large provincial education tax increase, which particularly hit residential properties this year.”

The deadline day is expected to be much busier at City Hall and while Patrick said they’re prepared for increased foot traffic, it’s important to utilize the other methods of payment before they are unavailable. Paying at a financial institution or by mail is still possible, but comes with delays that could extend past the deadline.

“You don’t want to have it late, you really want to make sure you get that funding in,” Patrick said.

Utilizing the secure drop box at the northeast door and paying online are other options, although there’s a three per cent convenience fee when done via credit card. Patrick added that while the registration process would have to happen immediately, owners can still get on T.I.P.P.S.

“You have to set up before the taxes are due,” he said. “You pay it over the next four months, then you go on monthly payments.”
