Turtleford Spray Park up and running

Aug 18, 2021 | 12:50 PM

The Town of Turtleford has completed and debuted its spray park.

A grand opening was held over the weekend with dozens of families and several dignitaries present.

This ends a project that took years of planning and fundraising and several months of construction. The space, which has multiple play areas, water drainage and distribution systems and public change rooms, is located behind the Turtleford Community Centre and owned and operated by the town.

More than $90,000 was fundraised to compliment the $63,000 and $52,495 from the federal and provincial governments respectively. This was under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Speaking for the province and Government Relations Minister Don McMorris, MLA Ryan Domotor said the government is proud to support the Town of Turtleford through this investment in the project.

“This park will provide a valuable outdoor space for families in Turtleford to enjoy for the rest of this summer, and for many more summers to come,” Domotor said. “After the challenging time we’ve all been through with COVID-19, it’s wonderful to see this project come to life and provide a safe space where kids and families can relax and have some well-earned fun.”

The Turtleford Spray and Play Committee handled the fundraising efforts for the project, as well as contributing to the work this summer, something they’ve done since 2017. Delays in fundraising events, in the past year occurred due to the pandemic, necessitating the timely involvement from government.

Group president and town councillor Kari Bauldic thanked both governments, the town and the many donors and volunteers who helped make the spray park project a reality.

“I am so proud of our community, that we have come together, worked hard and brought this beautiful park to our town,” she said.

In addition to the immediate benefit of kids having a refreshing place to have fun in the summertime, the other amenities added from the extra fundraising dollars, such as benches and a gazebo, are additional perks that Bauldic and others hope draws in more families.

“It will benefit our community because it gives everyone a place to gather and come together enjoying the outdoors and staying active,” Bauldic said.

Both Bauldic and Turtleford Mayor Lawrence Weinrauch indicated earlier this month that one of the next focuses for the town will be improving walking paths.
