Firearms incident in Moosomin First Nation under investigation

Aug 18, 2021 | 3:45 PM

Battlefords RCMP are investigating an altercation involving firearms that occurred Tuesday evening in Moosomin First Nation.

According to the report made late in the evening, two groups of people, one associated with a white van and the other with a grey car, were fighting and someone then shot at the van. All parties fled the area prior to police arrival.

Later that evening, the abandoned van was seized. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the investigation is still dynamic and changing.

“Additional statements are being taken and we’re hoping we can identify some of the people involved, but there’s no indication yet of anyone that can be considered suspects or victims,” he said.

Tremblay added that in this type of situation having a group of individuals who aren’t cooperative makes the investigation difficult, given they likely know who the other parties are. However, the risk factor to other residents is another priority.

“When you’re dealing with something as elevated as firearms, there’s concerns outside of the victims in the community,” he said.

No reports of injuries have been made.

Battlefords RCMP had 20 other assault investigations, with one resulting in charges. A report came in the evening of August 11 at a residence on Winder Crescent in North Battleford. A male victim had minor injuries to his hands and arms and the suspect was quickly located and arrested. Tremblay said the two knew each other.

“The injuries are not believed to be overly serious, but they were significant enough that she is still facing assault charges,” he said.

A 21-year-old woman is charged with assault, assaulting a police officer, obstruction and breach of probation. She was released from custody on numerous conditions, including not to have any contact with the victim. Her first court appearance is scheduled for September 16.

Vehicle thefts continue

Battleford RCMP responded to a total of 510 calls during the past week, including 10 vehicle thefts, four of which are active investigations. These include a grey 2002 Honda Civic (Saskatchewan License 292-JNF) taken from Moosomin First Nation on Tuesday, a blue 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan (Saskatchewan License 292-JNF) reported stolen from Railway Avenue East in North Battleford on August 13 and a black 2018 Sure-Trac Trailer (Saskatchewan License 849-KTZ) that was stolen from Battle Springs View in Battleford some time overnight between Sunday and Monday.

One of four break and enters was also a vehicle theft. A break-in at a shop in the RM of Round Hill resulted in the theft of a brown 2002 Ford F250 (Saskatchewan License DRS-704) and a grey Custom Trailer (Saskatchewan License 779-JRR).

Tremblay said they are still gathering information on these thefts. He reiterated that securing every vehicle is critical, with three of the calls stemming from keys being left in the ignition.

“People do forget, have their hands full and that happens to everybody,” he said. “But again, it’s one of those things to be extra vigilant about. Most new vehicles are not starting without a key.”

“Every time we prevent this from happening then it helps deter other incidents.”

Other calls

The detachment also had 14 Mental Health Act investigations, three charges relating to impaired driving, four traffic collisions, 31 charges for various driving offences and three missing persons investigations. Teenager Skyler Tinker’s case remains active, as he is still suspected to be in Saskatoon.

Tremblay said more information from the seizure of cocaine earlier this week will be shared once available. Anyone with information on any incident can call the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
