The NDP is announcing their candidate for the Battlefords-Lloydminster riding who will be running in the upcoming federal election.

Erik Hansen will be representing the party for the local riding.

The Unity resident says now that he has more time available he is glad to be able to step up as a candidate.

“I found that I had a lot more energy after I retired from the working world,” he said.

Hansen has prior experience in politics serving on the Town of Unity council from 2011 to 2013.

This will be his first time running in a federal election.

Hansen says he wanted to run because he hopes to create a positive influence in the community.

“I feel that there are not enough people out there talking to people in general and getting their ideas and input,” he said.

Hansen is married with two grown children.

Looking back at his career history, Hansen worked in Edmonton for several years after first apprenticing for the heavy equipment parts trade. He later moved into the role of production manager in the manufacturing sector. He went on to pursue work in Hinton, Alta., as a parts manager in the mining sector. Over a decade ago, Hansen and his wife returned home to Unity, where Hansen worked in the agricultural industry at Moody’s Equipment until his retirement in January 2020.

Hansen said he hopes people will be able to see beyond the often divisive talk in politics.

“It affects us all, in both positive and negative ways,” he said. “If we can get together and talk responsibly, it could probably improve.”

Hansen said he would like to try to get more people active in politics in general in the future.
