The City of North Battleford is officially declaring this week as Pride Week.

Mayor David Gillan took part in a Pride flag-raising ceremony outside city hall on monday to mark the occasion.

“We’re very proud to kick off Pride Week,” he said. “This is just another example of how we demonstrate that we are an inclusive community here in the Battlefords.”

Battlefords Pride members gathered with supporters to launch the week and handed out free slices of cake donated by the local Discovery Co-op Food Store.

Battlefords Pride president, Bobbisue Thompson, says she is glad the city and town have joined the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities this year, affirming their commitment to provide a safe place for all people to live.

“Inclusivity, it’s something that I think every group should have, certainly us, because we are a group of people who have been traditionally excluded,” Thompson said.

She took the opportunity to invite people to come to some of the variety of Pride Week events taking place from Aug. 16 to 22, adding that the focus is “family-friendly.”

The annual Pride parade will take place Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. in North Battleford.
