Nature of Sound

Nature walk and craft event coming to Finlayson Island Wednesday

The North Battleford art galleries are inviting residents to take part in a new ‘Nature of Sound’ project exploring and reflecting on the outdoors and the many sounds that come with sounding nature.

Listen to the Land – Nature Walks and Talks

August 11 and 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and then again from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., residents are invited to take part in a nature walk on Finlayson Island with Nehiyaw spoken word artist, Janelle ‘Ecoaborijanelle’ Pewapsconias to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the human relationship to nature, coupling sound science and local culture.

Following the walk, participants will then have the chance to make a small musical instrument of natural materials found on the walk.

Curator and manager of galleries with the City of North Battleford, Leah Garven said the event is something free that people of all ages can take part in and enjoy.

“It really is for everyone; the walk is going to be short, and it’s just taking some time to look at the grasses, the animals you see along the trail, and the sounds the wind through the grasses [and trees] make,” she said. “It’s understanding the science of sound on the land, and from a cultural perspective.”

Nature Wind Chime Art Installation

The following week, August 17-20 from 6 to 8 p.m. daily at the Don Ross Centre, residents are again invited to take part in crafting musical instruments of natural items found in nature.

Garven said the event offers a chance for people to explore their creativity in trying something new that will later be part of a larger joint-project.

“People can make small things or work together as a group,” she said. “Maybe a family or group of friends want to create something together, so it’s also a chance for collaboration and having fun together, weaving things and shaping things and making things.”

The natural sound objects will then be displayed in a large mobile or wind chime on a tree at Central Park. Pewapsconias, who will lead the projects, will then also return in September to perform some of her poetry in response to the activities.

Both events are free to attend and residents can take part in whatever is of interest to them. For more information, or to register, visit the City of North Battleford website, or call (306) 445-1760.
