Three charged, drugs seized following traffic stop near Maidstone

Police arrested three people last week on numerous criminal charges, including identity fraud and drug possession, following a traffic stop near Maidstone on August 4.

A Saskatchewan RCMP Roving Traffic Unit officer stopped an eastbound vehicle on Highway 16 for a license check, which had a male driver and male passenger that could not provide a driver’s license. A female driver pulled up in the second vehicle to provide that license and the officer suspected the occupants may be in possession of drugs. As a result, they were detained and arrested and a search of the vehicles found 36 grams of crack cocaine and two pounds of illegal dried cannabis. Police also found a taser, a functioning digital scale, five cell phones, around $3,000 in Canadian dollars and a vacuum sealer with several unused bags.

Additionally, police found identity documents matching the description of the male driver, showing the driver’s license the man originally provided did not belong to him. As a result of investigation, the three individuals were arrested and charged with numerous criminal offences.

Twenty-eight year-old Liban Abdi Mohamed, 30 year-old Garang Bol Alam and 18 year-old Shyann Adelyne Gladys Nichols of Lloydminster, Alta., are all charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing it and possession of proceeds of crime under $5000. Mohamed also faces charges of obstructing a peace officer, identity fraud and possession of government documents.

Nichols faces those same three charges as Mohamed in aiding and abetting, as well as possession of a prohibited weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a prohibited device for a dangerous purpose.

All three make their first appearance in Lloydminster Provincial Court on October 26.
