St. Walburg’s Laboucane sets track record in Frog Lake as memorable season continues

For St. Walburg’s Jamie Laboucane, the 2021 Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) season continues to be one for the books.

Currently sitting at about the midway mark of the summer schedule, Laboucane finished Day 1 in Frog Lake atop the leaderboard with the fastest time of the night on Thursday, while also setting a new track record at 1:15.93.

Already the track record holder in North Battleford, set previously with a time of 1:01.03 back in 2011, Laboucane said it’s always special to hit that new high-water mark on a track.

“It’s pretty awesome; I’ve been running pretty strong all year, and anytime you have a track record — and I don’t know if it’ll hold over the next four days — but it’s pretty fun for a while anyways,” he said. “Not many guys get to have their names on that [list].”

The new track benchmark is the latest highlight for Laboucane on the tour this year. He has also collected an aggregate title at the first-ever North American Chuckwagon Championships earlier this month: a nine-day event that was held at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds, July 11-19.

Laboucane said his success earlier this season has only helped his confidence as the summer’s progressed, adding that he remains hungry for a strong finish to the campaign as well.

“Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, that win in Lloyd was pretty monumental to me,” he said. “That said, we’re still going, trying to make the dash here, and there’s another [stop] coming up in Poundmaker, and then hopefully I can make the top four in Lloyd; so there’s still a lot of running yet and we’ll see what happens.”

Laboucane added that he’d like to thank his sponsors, family and friends for their support this season, as well as the CPCA for their hospitality throughout the summer.

Following the current stop in Frog Lake, which will wrap up Sunday, Aug. 1, the tour will advance to Poundmaker Aug. 5-8, and then Meadow Lake Aug. 13-15. The final stop in Lloydminster will take place Aug. 18-22.
