Red Pheasant Cree Nation planning youth culture camp

Jul 28, 2021 | 6:00 PM

Under the bright summer skies, young people will have a chance to learn more about their culture and take part in a variety of fun activities at the same time during an upcoming camp at Red Pheasant Cree Nation.

The Youth Culture/Summer Camp 2021 runs from Aug. 2 to 4. Participants have an opportunity to stay overnight as well on Aug. 2 and 3.

One of the organizers, Lacee Wuttunee, says the event that’s open to ages 12 to 17 includes such activities as Medicine Picking, Storytelling and Identity to help kids learn more about themselves and be proud of their heritage. A Round Dance is also planned.

“They can connect with their culture and their identity,” she said. “We’re going to have Elder mentoring so the kids can speak to the Elders. We really want to connect the youth with their cultural identity. That’s a big aspect of what we are doing with this culture camp.”

She said there will be an opportunity for the participants to take part in a sweat as well to discover and understand their native name.

There will also be a drum-making session and a big feast with plenty to eat throughout the camp.

Organizers also plan to hold a Gang Awareness learning session during the event.

An expert will also be visiting to teach youth about survival training.

Most of all, Wuttunee says, there will be plenty of fun activities for the youth to get involved in, such as sport games, arts and crafts, and a movie night.

“We’re hoping to make it a summer-camp feel for the kids, where they will have supervision, security and First Aid there if they decide to camp over, like in other summer camps,” she said.

The event is being organized by Red Pheasant Chief and Council, as well as Prevention Services at the First Nation.

Red Pheasant member youths can attend the event for free. Those from surrounding First Nations are also welcome to attend for a fee. About 15 to 20 spots are currently still available. The event has a capacity of 50 kids. More details are available on Red Pheasant Cree Nation’s Facebook Page.

Wuttunee says the camp will be a lot of fun for the kids taking part. She is hoping to see a good turnout.
