Fire ban in effect for RM of Battle River

Due to the continuing hot, dry weather, a number of municipalities in the region have a fire ban in effect until further notice.

A fire ban has now also been issued for the RM of Battle River No. 438 as a result of the severe dry conditions.

The Battleford Fire Department looks after the RM of Battle River. Fire Chief Larry Gabruch issued the current ban for the RM.

Deputy Fire Chief Geoff Thompson said firefighters have been battling a bushfire in the RM south of Battleford on July 22 and 23. Thursday’s strong winds further stoked the flames.

Thompson noted the Town of Battleford does not have a fire ban in place.

“The town’s not the problem. It’s the RM we are worried about,” he said. “That’s where the fires start and spread like crazy across the fields.”

Thompson reminds people not to light any fires or conduct burns of any kind while the ban is in effect.

He said unfortunately it is often an accident that starts grass fires, such as brakes overheating on a vehicle, which can spark a fire.

So he asks people to be especially careful when near grassy areas.
