North Battleford’s Artistic Nomad Productions is celebrating the summer with a backyard concert series that will continue next month.

Taking place Aug. 11, the upcoming event will be the second of its kind this summer, and feature Saskatchewan’s Jake Vaadeland and The Sturgeon River Boys.

Vaadeland is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from the Big River area, whose traditional sound and unique style could be defined as a blend of Bluegrass and Rockabilly. Vaadeland specializes mainly on banjo, guitar and vocals, and performs his music along with a variety of backup musicians known as ‘The Sturgeon River Boys.’

Dannyll Challis is the founder of Artistic Nomad Productions, which he started this spring, as a way to offer live music and other entertainment within the Battlefords community. He said it’s all about highlighting some of the many talented performers from across Saskatchewan.

“For me, it’s huge. I think we take for granted sometimes just how many great artists we have in this province, not only musicians, but dancers, actors and more,” he said. “All of those great artists started somewhere and there’s so many talented people from around this province.”

Next month’s event will be the second installment of the backyard concert series this summer.

The first was held July 14, and featured 2021 Saskatchewan Male Artist of the Year, JJ Voss. The budding country music star; whose album “Come Along with Me,” was named Roots Album of the Year by the Saskatchewan Country Music Association, performed over two hours with a mix of music and storytelling.

Challis said while they intend to host other, more large-scale events in the near future, just being able to provide a more intimate setting where people in the community can come together to enjoy some live music for the first time in nearly two years is something they’ve been happy to offer through the backyard concert setup.

“We thought the backyard concert series was the perfect way to get 30 people together in a backyard, socially-distanced to listen to and enjoy some live music coming out of the pandemic [restrictions],” Challis said. “So we’re looking forward to it again next month, and hopefully we’ll continue to get the word out for more events to come in the future.”

The performance Aug. 11 will be held at 1322 96th Street in North Battleford. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m., with the concert to begin at 7 p.m. To learn more about event pricing or to purchase tickets, visit the Artistic Nomad Productions website.
