City installing warning lights to reduce speed on Territorial Drive at 15th Avenue

Jul 21, 2021 | 11:14 AM

The City of North Battleford has been approved for funding to install reduced speed warning lights for the intersection on Territorial Drive at 15th Avenue.

City director of operations Stewart Schafer says the cost is being completely funded by the province for the pre-emptive traffic safety lights set.

The project cost is covered through the SGI Provincial Traffic Safety Fund Grant Program, for an approved grant amount of $68,909. Can-Traffic Services will be responsible for the installation work.

Schafer said in his report, traffic lights were installed at the intersection for the first time in 2020.

“It became immediately clear that with the high traffic speeds on Territorial Drive, pre-emptive signal lights would be required for the intersection,” he said.

Residents were concerned some heavier vehicles were not ready to slow down in time on Territorial Drive before the intersection. The warning lights will be able to alert drivers to prepare to reduce their speed and stop for the lights when prompted in advance.

Coun. Kelli Hawtin was pleased to see the issue addressed.

“Thanks to administration for working on this and thanks to the SGI grant to be able to provide this,” she said. “There are going to be some extremely pleased citizens knowing this safety initiative is coming to our community.”
