NSRBL announces 2021 MVP nominees

The North Sask. River Baseball League (NSRBL) announced the nominees for league MVP Thursday, and among those nominated were local standouts Kyle Gregoire of the North Battleford Beavers and Andrew Hudec of the Battlefords Trappers.

For the last 14 years, Gregoire has been a familiar face for senior baseball fans in the community, patrolling the centerfield position for the North Battleford Beavers.

Serving as player-coach and captain, Gregoire played a team-high 10 games this season, leading the club in total plate appearances (37), at-bats (34), runs (eight), and hits (12), while also placing fourth on the squad in batting average (.353) and third in slugging percentage (.529).

Gregoire said it means a lot to receive the recognition of his teammates, who voted him as Beavers MVP.

“I appreciate it,” Gregoire said. “I think we have a great group of guys and there’s a few of us who probably could’ve taken home the honour, so I just appreciate the recognition from the guys, that they see me as an important piece and someone helping out to get some victories.”

For Hudec, this was his fifth year with the Trappers, playing mainly the catcher and shortstop positions.

In 11 games, Hudec led the Trappers with a team-high 42 plate appearances and 15 hits, while also topping the team leaderboard in batting average (.455), on-base percentage (.571) and slugging percentage (.636).

Hudec called the team MVP nod something special.

“It means a lot. I pride myself in going out and working my hardest every day on the field, so to get honoured with being the team MVP is definitely pretty special,” Hudec said. “You look at the list of the other nominees around the league and there’s some really good players, so to be bunched in with those other guys is pretty cool.”

Also nominated for league MVP honours are Brett Esau of the Meadow Lake Sox, Riley McNab of the Mervin Flyers, Layne Young of the St. Walburg Reds, Brock Harrison of the Standard Hill Lakers, Tanner Huber of the Unity Junior Cardinals, Clayton Ermel of the Border City Jays, Jaydon Gartner of the Lloydminster Twins, Dylan Flasch of the Kindersley Stallions, Jared Hillis of the Macklin Lakers, and Steve Redlich of the Wilkie Brewers.

Each team MVP nominee was selected by their teammates. League MVP will be announced later this month.
