Alberta man arrested in North Battleford for drug trafficking, assault

Battlefords RCMP arrested an adult male from Red Deer, Alta. early this morning on numerous charges, including assaulting a police officer.

Police had conducted a traffic stop on 100th Street in North Battleford shortly after midnight, where the passenger in the vehicle fled on foot. He was wanted on multiple warrants from Alberta. Members gave chase and took him into custody after a brief struggle that required the use of a taser to assist in arresting the suspect.

“The subject and the two officers involved were not injured,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said.

Officers also seized a knife, bear mace, several pre-packaged baggies of suspected cocaine and several other items of drug paraphernalia as a result of the arrest.

In addition to the assault charge, 20-year-old Denver Deschampes is facing charges of trafficking cocaine, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property. He remains in custody and is making his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court this morning.

The driver of the vehicle was also arrested, but was released after it was deemed there wasn’t sufficient evidence for criminal charges. However, the driver was issued provincial tickets for traffic offences.

“This is still under investigation, so there still is the possibility that charges could be filed later,” Tremblay said. “But right now, it doesn’t look like that’s the case.”
