RCMP Report: One teen found, one still missing

Jul 8, 2021 | 10:45 AM

Half of the search for two missing 13-year-olds from North Battleford is over.

Aliya Natomagan was located in Saskatoon by police over the weekend, following a month long search for her and Skyler Tinker. At this time, Sgt. Neil Tremblay of the Battlefords RCMP said they believe Tinker is still in Saskatoon.

“They weren’t together when the girl was located, so we’re still looking for Skyler,” he said. “The fact that he does have contacts in terms of family and friends there, at least he’s not deemed that he’s in any type of imminent danger. But because of his age, we need to confirm his safety.”

Among the 549 calls for service the detachment dealt with the past week, three other missing persons reports were handled last week. Anyone with information on Tinker’s whereabouts are asked to call the detachment.

Possible breaking and entering connection

There were 29 break and enter investigations in the area, highlighted by a string of break-ins in lake communities north of the Battlefords. This includes break-ins at cabins on Aqualane Avenue in Aquadeo on June 30 and July 2, two break and enters to a residence on Pelican Point in Cochin July 2 and a beak-in to a cabin on Summerfield Drive in Cochin early in the morning of July 3.

Tremblay said given the location, it’s likely they’re dealing with the same individual or individuals.

“The two in Cochin were reported in the same morning within a half hour, so we’re thinking almost certainly that we’re dealing with the same suspect(s),” he said. “Even the two in Aquadeo were similar in circumstance. [But] whether we’re dealing with one person or group, or two separate groups, is unknown.”

Tremblay said officers are currently checking for information from neighbours and surveillance tapes in the area, as well as keeping track of pawnshops, internet sites for some of the stolen items. He added that the public can help by paying attention to anything that seems suspicious.

“If these activities are occurring, be a little bit more vigilant with people you don’t recognize in your neighbourhoods,” he said.

Other break and enter files included the unrelated arrests of 26-year-old Jocelyn Machatis and 34-year-old Derek Stanley over the weekend. Machatis was also charged with obstruction and identity fraud from the incident in North Battleford on July 3, as well as separate counts of assault and mischief from another incident that took place in Battleford on June 30. Stanley was charged in connection with five incidents of breaking and entering in the city, dating back to April.

Vehicle negligence during heat wave

Tremblay said this week was the first they’ve dealt with reports of motorists leaving animals and young children in vehicles alone for extended periods when temperatures are near 30°C. One case involving children that occurred on Canada Day is still under investigation.

“No decision has been made yet on charges,” Tremblay said. “The one with a dog has not been solved, as the people in question had driven off prior to police arriving on scene.”

Given the dangers that come with leaving children and pets in vehicles during hot weather, as well as potential criminal charges, Tremblay said it’s imperative that parents, caregivers and pet owners do not allow this sort of situation to occur.

“When we get that type of heat wave, it’s extremely important that people understand that even a couples minutes can be very dangerous for an animal or a young child in a vehicle,” he said.

Charges that may occur in these sorts of incidents include criminal negligence and animal cruelty.

Multiple assault cases

This week’s report also included 26 assault investigations, including a bear macing incident that occurred July 4 on Scott Drive in North Battleford. The victim was treated on scene and a 28-year-old woman was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon. She makes her first appearance in court on August 23.

Other calls from the report include a health/COVID violation investigation, 31 mental health investigations, three charges relating to impaired driving and 12 vehicle thefts. Police are asking the public to help in locating two of them, a black 2011 Dodge Avenger with no license plate that was reported stolen over the weekend on the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, as well as a black 2004 GMC Sierra with a Saskatchewan license plate of 499-JLV, reported stolen July 4 from the 1500 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
