Sask. mother forgives son’s killer, but awaits closure
A 28-year-old woman has received a life sentence, with no chance of parole for 15 years, following a man’s death in west central Saskatchewan early last year.
Shari Heathen was one of two people charged in the death of Braeden Sparvier. His lifeless, frozen body, was found Jan. 1, 2020, in a farmer’s field in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Frenchman Butte, west of St. Walburg. On June 11, Heathen pled guilty to second degree murder and during the court hearing at Battleford Court of Queen’s bench, Sparvier’s mother Karen Montana said she forgave Heathen.
“I feel that’s what my son would want because I always told Braeden to forgive, no matter how much people oppose you and you’ve got to be willing to let go and move forward,” Montana explained to paNOW.
According to the statement of facts read in court, both Sparvier and Heather were initially at the same residence the day prior, along with six others. Heathen was using methamphetamine at the time and became angry with the fact Sparvier was there. She proceeded to punch him several times, and told him to leave.
