Drive-in movie tour returns to the Battlefords

Jul 6, 2021 | 3:36 PM

As the province slowly opens up this summer amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, drive-in showings for movies ahead in multiple communities.

Residents in the Battlefords will have a chance for family night out on July 13 when the Reels on Wheels drive-in movie tour comes through town. Put on by Prairie Toyota Dealers, the tour raises funding for local charities in each community.

The four-storey screen will be up at the Battlefords Agricultural Society, with a number of giveaways and prizes, while the title is the 2021 Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon.

In a media release, Prairie Toyota Dealers Chairman Chris Schulz said they were able to raise more than $40,000 for local charities in 2020 and are optimistic that they can raise more this year. In 2020, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Battlefords was the area’s recipient charity, when they held a screening of the Pixar film Onward in August.

“It has been an indescribably difficult year for everyone, and we’re happy to do our part to not only create a fun, family-friendly event for those in our community, but to support some fantastic local charities while doing so,” Schulz said.

BGC Battlefords Executive Director Nicole Combres said they are incredibly grateful for the support of Rainbow Toyota and the community, adding that the event is perfect for this summer.

“I think this is a really great way to get our community members together, enjoy the fresh air and see a great movie.”

Combres said this sort of event is particularly encouraging with the provincial reopening plan progressing to the Step 3 date of July 11. BGC Battlefords, like most of the region’s charitable organizations, are particularly reliant on events for most of their yearly fundraising efforts. Combres said they are looking forward to making that part of their annual operations again.

“As the restrictions begin to lift, our hopes are that we will be able to get back out in the community, putting on those fundraising events and ensuring that we have the dollars secured to continue to operate high quality programs and services,” she said.

Gates will open for the movie at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with the show getting underway at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are required to attend, which are available on Eventbrite.
