Wildfire moves past main site near Cigar Lake uranium mine
After an evacuation was ordered yesterday, Cameco has announced the wildfire near the Cigar Lake uranium mine has moved past the main camp area.
According to a media release, the main camp did not experience any serious impact and around 80 essential workers at the camp are safe. They continue to inspect the area but believe there has been no structural damage to buildings.
“However, the situation remains active,” the statement read. “Forest fires are dynamic and circumstances can change rapidly. We therefore continue to monitor the situation very closely and work alongside provincial wildfire management officials from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) who remain on-site. Crews extinguished a few hot spots overnight and some roads in the area remain closed.”
There is no timeline set to resume work on the site or for the 230 workers who were evacuated to return, although, they are planning for a remobilization process. The return to work will depend on a number of factors such as the status of the wildfire, smoke conditions and safe road access to the site.
