Hefty fine for Sask. man after a dozen deer were found dead on his property

A 67-year-old Star City man is facing a $15,000 fine for illegal hunting.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation Officers in Melfort received a report of a dead deer found on the laneway of a property west of Star City on Jan. 7.

The owner of the property was interviewed and admitted to shooting 10 white-tailed deer that were discovered on the property. The deer were shot at night between Jan. 1 and 6, as they came into the property to feed. The man’s reasoning for shooting the deer was that they had been causing damage to nearby trees and shrubs.

A second call in the same area on January 10, resulted in two additional dead deer being found.

Ivan L. Bueker entered guilty pleas in Melfort provincial court to the offences that include illegal hunting, waste of edible game, hunting within 500-m of occupied buildings, hunting big game with a rimfire rifle and night hunting.

Bueker is also banned from hunting for three years.

Conservation Officer Supervisor in Melfort Cam Lukan said there is a better route to take when there are concerns about wildlife.

“CO’s may be able to provide some advice or loan out equipment that would deter animals from coming onto personal property,” Lukan said.

Residents with wildlife-related property damage are also encouraged to visit the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporations website to learn more about prevention techniques and compensation programming.
