Summer Day Camps to return to NationsWEST Field House next month

Jun 24, 2021 | 3:54 PM

The NationsWEST Field House in North Battleford will be offering their Summer Day Camp program again this year.

After being cancelled last year due to the pandemic, the summer camps will be back for six weeks in 2021. Each will be held Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and feature its own unique theme, with corresponding activities and games.

The first five weeks will all be suited for ages 7-11, while the final week will be a ‘Biz Camp’ for ages 11-14 and feature an entrepreneurship theme. Though the CUplex summer camps have been offered for the last number of years, traditionally, they have been run strictly through volunteerism. This marks the first year the sports and rec complex has hired seasonal staff to put together specific programming for each of the weeks.

Abbey Neufeld, who will serve as Day Camp coordinator, along with program leader Taylor Wakelin, said she jumped at the opportunity to get involved with the Day Camp when she saw the job posting.

“I just thought it would be a really great fit for me since I’ve had a lot of experience planning activities and I love working with kids,” Neufeld said. “Just getting to have some fun and bring out [my own] inner child a bit to plan some of this stuff sounded like a good opportunity to me.”

Neufeld broke down the summer camp schedule outline to battlefordsNOW (available at bottom of the article), which includes weeks centered on themes such as fairytales, pirates, dinosaurs, science, and superheroes.

Neufeld said while the Fairytale Camp will tend to feature more whimsical and Disney-themed crafts and activities, Pirate Week will have more treasure/scavenger hunt-style games, and Mad Science week will include fun and age-appropriate science experiments.

CUplex manager, Michelle Horncastle said they’re looking forward to being able to return to offering the Day Camp program this year and provide youth in the community with enjoyable programming to take part in.

“It’s really exciting, and especially when, on July 11 we’ll reach Step 3 [of the Provincial Re-Open Plan], so the kids won’t need to wear masks after that and all the restrictions [should] be gone; that’s quite exciting, and we look forward to seeing a good turnout this year.”

Snacks and lunch will be provided at each camp. Events such as swimming will be held across the various weeks as well, as the camps interact with both the NationsWEST Field House and CO-OP Aquatic Centre.
