RCMP Report: search for missing teens continues

Jun 23, 2021 | 2:56 PM

Battlefords RCMP saw a sharp increase in case files this week, with 544 calls for service.

Despite the uptick, it was quiet in terms of significant cases, aside from two local teens remaining missing.

Of the eight missing person cases this week, only the files on 13 year-olds Skyler Tinker and Aliyah Natomagan of North Battleford remain active. The pair were initially reported missing in May and after briefly being found, they went missing again.

Police believe that they are in Saskatoon, but their whereabouts have not yet been confirmed. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said while they’re actively looking for them, along with Saskatoon Police, the situation is slightly less serious than before.

“There has been some contact with people they know in the Saskatoon area,” he said. “It seems to be more of a runaway situation where they don’t want to be found, as opposed to the situation where they’re in any immediate danger. Obviously, if anything changes, we’ll bring that to the forefront.”

Tremblay said it is more challenging dealing with missing persons cases where they don’t want to be found and are aware law enforcement members are searching for them.

“We just try and find people that know them, where they’ve been, and then try and track down phones that they’re using to try and narrow down our search parametres,” he said.

Another North Battleford teen, Mary-Lee Strain, has been located. She was reported missing as of June 22.

Tremblay said they did have a large number of calls, but that the majority of cases were swiftly dealt with or of a less serious nature.

“Most of the cases were addressed quickly, whether there were charges or not, with nothing outstanding that would be a larger concern for the public,” he said.

Attempted hotwire leads to drug and weapons charges

Vehicle thefts continued this week, with seven reported thefts. One case resulted in the arrest of two adults, following their attempt to hot-wire a vehicle on the 1000 block of 109 Street in North Battleford.

The report of the pair’s attempted theft came in the morning of June 18, when a bystander noticed suspicious activity with the vehicle. A 36-year-old woman from Lloydminster was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and identity fraud, while a 35-year-old male from North Battleford is facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The matter relating to hot-wiring a vehicle is still being investigated.

Both suspects were released with a future court date in mind, which was not available at this time. Tremblay said this is common in many cases.

“It’s a function of the allegation and the criminal history of the individuals,” he said.

There were three stolen vehicles that have not been recovered from the past week. The first, a red 2007 Cobalt with a Saskatchewan license plate of 739-LNX, was reported stolen from just north of North Battleford in the late afternoon of June 16. The theft of the second, a red 2017 Dodge Journey with a Saskatchewan License plate of 500-LNR, is from a residence on Sweetgrass First Nation on the early afternoon of June 22. Lastly, a green 2001 Ford Supercab truck with a license plate of 428-HYT, was reported stolen from Cochin on June 22 in the morning.

Tremblay said these are likely crimes of opportunity and not connected.

“They’re all on different locations, and for a couple of them, the suspect was known to the individual,” he said. “Every circumstance seems to be a little different.”

Additional crime numbers

Other numbers from the reported included 25 assault investigations, two reported break and enters, three health/COVID violation investigations, 21 Mental Health Act investigations and three charges relating to impaired driving.

Battlefords RCMP is continuing to ask anyone with information on any incident to call the detachment or Crime Stoppers.
