Investigation of Highway #17 collision still underway

Maidstone RCMP is continuing to investigate a highway collision that occurred north of Lloydminster over the weekend.

Police responded to the two-vehicle incident on Saturday morning where the investigation determined a southbound and northbound collided on Highway 17. Both drivers were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and there were no passengers in either vehicle. The highway was closed for several hours during the initial investigation before reopening in the afternoon.

Maidstone Sgt. Jolyne Harrison said they had heard there may have been a person who witnessed the accident but didn’t stay until emergency services arrived.

“If there was a witness who drove by, we’d like to talk to them,” she said.

Harrison added that there are a number of procedures that will need to be done to complete the investigation. In general terms, police want to confirm that there weren’t any underlying reasons why the collision occurred.

“Whether it was distracted driving, alcohol or drugs, sometimes we even consider a suicide a possibility in collisions,” Harrison said. “We need to rule out all of those things.”

“So, if you’re looking into something that could be drug or alcohol-related, you’re going to be doing warrants and medical releases from hospitals, as well. It can take a bit of time.”

Maidstone RCMP are being assisted by an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the detachment.

Truck stolen

RCMP in Maidstone are also investigating the recent theft of a truck in the RM of Wilton on June 21.

It’s described as a grey 2008 Ford F-350 with a Saskatchewan license plate of RRT-111. The truck has a long box with a red slip tank in the back.

Harrison said calls are down this year on everything, with around 25 per cent less calls province-wide. The conditions of the pandemic is potentially a factor.

“People aren’t traveling, so collisions are down. People are at home more, so thefts are down,” Harrison said. “Everything has been down.”

Anyone who sees this Ford F-350 or has any information related to the theft is asked to call the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
