North Battleford’s Shae Maunula wasted no time picking up where he left off last year, at his first golf tournament of the 2021 spring season, in Regina over the weekend.

Stepping back on the fairway – and then back on the podium – at the opening Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) mini-event of the season, Maunula’s 71 was tops amongst the Boy’s 11-12 Division, as the only player on the day to finish better than a 76 in the pool of 18 in the age group.

For Maunula, the MJT win was his second in as many years, still at just 11 years of age.

Shae’s father Scott, who also serves as his son’s caddie, said he was proud of Shae’s ability to stay locked in throughout the day and take advantage of his opportunities to finish on the green.

“He stayed focused throughout the game, stayed out of trouble, and really made some smart shots,” Scott Maunula said. “All that led to him coming in with a pretty decent score.”

Local competitive golfer, Colby Friedrich who plays once a week with the younger Maunula during the season, said it’s been great to see Shae reap the rewards of his hard work over the last couple of years now.

“It’s awesome to see him play out there and he reminds me of my younger self,” Friedrich said with a laugh. “If he wants to continue with golf he can definitely have a good junior golf career in Saskatchewan. He’s the new up-and-comer in the Battlefords for the sport.”

Maunula will return to the course next weekend for another tournament, this time at Swift Current’s Elmwood Golf Club later this month.
