Weather has limited effect on Battlefords community

Jun 17, 2021 | 6:00 PM

Effects of recent storm activity in the Battlefords have left little effect on the community and the North Battleford Fire Department expects to soon lift the city’s fire ban.

At this time, there have been no reports of flooding, large power outages or outdoor damage to an areas in the area, despite strong winds with gusts around 60 km/h. Deputy Fire Chief Colin O’Hara said they hadn’t dealt with a signal call related to the storms so far, noting that it’s very uncommon for that to be the case with that kind of weather.

“No downed power lines, anything related to the storm,” he said. “Knock on wood that it stays that way for us.”

O’Hara said any more rain will likely be enough to fully address previous dry conditions. Based on this weekend’s forecast, he expects that to be the case.

“Our only concern right now is that the winds have been so high and with how dry it was last weekend, the moisture isn’t into the ground enough,” he said. “Just let that rain come this weekend and hopefully it will be good enough to lift the ban.”

North Battleford has a 30 per cent chance of showers Friday and a 60 per cent chance on Saturday, before sunnier conditions begin on Sunday.
