Two small COVID-19 outbreaks at Battlefords Union Hospital

Jun 11, 2021 | 3:12 PM

The Battlefords Union Hospital currently has two active COVID-19 outbreaks

According to a statement provided to battlefordsNOW by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, the two outbreaks occurred within two weeks and are listed on the provincial website. A COVID-19 outbreak is defined by the SHA as two or more people testing positive for the virus where all are linked to the same household or event in a specified time period.

One is in the Medical Unit 3 N&S, which was declared on May 27. The other, declared June 8, is in the Dialysis Unit. Case and contact investigations determined there are 19 cases so far that have been linked to both outbreaks since they started, including both patients and staff.

The SHA said precautions are in place to protect other patients and staff members. This includes limited access to the units and everyone entering the units using proper personal protective equipment and following all infection prevention and control guidelines.

Additionally, the SHA said they are continuing to encourage everyone who has urgent or emergent care needs to seek appropriate care regardless of how busy hospitals may be. Residents can do so by either calling 911 or attending the emergency department.

Other recent outbreaks in the Battlefords that are listed on the provincial website include the Lighthouse of the Battlefords and the Co-op Agro Centre on June, Davidson Manor on May 24 and Styles by Gail on June 5.

As of June 11, there are 47,668 positive cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan, including 4,563 in the North West region. There are also a total 46,311 recoveries, 104 hospitalizations and 554 deaths. The active case total in the province has dropped to 899, 120 of which are in the North West.

More than 860,000 vaccines have been administered.
