Four charged following drugs, weapons seizure

Battlefords RCMP arrested five people over the weekend, charging four of them, following the seizure of drugs, weapons and cash.

On Saturday, the Gang Task Force executed a recent search warrant on the 300 block of 29 street in Battleford, in conjunction with a traffic stop of a suspect vehicle. At the residence, police seized two firearms, half of a pound of cocaine, half of a pound of psilocybin (commonly as known as magic mushrooms) and approximately $3,500 in cash. Five people were arrested.

Sgt. Adam Buckingham said some of the individuals were previously known to law enforcement, adding this bust will have an impact.

“Any time we can get drugs off the street, it’s definitely significant to a community this size,” he said. “And this seizure was by no means small either.”

Of the five arrested, four were charged. Twenty-nine year old Sheldon Kohut, 33 year old Zane Bolig and 24 year old Kitana Swindler of North Battleford, along with 33 year old Lawrence Morin of Battleford, are all charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Swindler is also charged with possession of proceeds of crime and Morin also received additional charges of possession of psilocybin for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, unauthorized possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm.

All four have been released for future court appearances. Buckingham said those assessments are made on a case by case basis, focusing on a number of factors, including past history.

“Often times if we believe the person is actually going to go to court on CDSA or drug charges, then it’s not uncommon to have that person released from custody, pending a court appearance,” he said.

The four will next appear in provincial court on Sept. 7 in North Battleford.
